So, you want to be a computer wizard????
1. Going to a specific web site. Click on white box next to the word
“address” and hit backspace key. Type in your web address (ex: www.amazon.com, www.yahoo.com, )
2. Moving within an
internet site. Space bar, up and down arrows, scrolling with the mouse all move the page up or down. Links (typically highlighted
in blue, or anywhere the “arrow” on the screen turns into a “pointing hand”) will connect you to more information. Just point
and click. To get back to the original page, click on the gray “back” button, upper left hand corner.
3. Using
a search Engine. Web sites are available to search for concepts or keywords. www.google.com, www.altavista.com, www.dogpile.com,
www.yahoo.com are just a few. Find the search box and type in keywords of information you hope to find. Not all the internet
is indexed. Quotations mark a phrase. + or – may cause a word to be present or not (ex: +pie –apple). It may be possible to
truncate a word, you need to read the Help screens for more information specific to the search engine itself. Tricks vary
from site to site.
4. How to judge the quality of a web site and it’s information. See attached hand-out for a few
pointers. Or, go to www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/webcrit.html for some guidelines.
5. Printing information.
Click on “file” (upper left corner). Select “print”, then “OK” to print the entire document. To print selection, highlight
desired portion (click and drag mouse over words) follow steps above, but chose “print selection” instead of “print all”.
.If printing from a database or Adobe document, use the print icon within the site (ex: www.irs.gov uses Adobe to print tax
forms). If any buttons light up on the printer, other than the one that says “data”, get help.
6. Frozen screens, or
just exiting. Press ctrl-alt-delete buttons (3 separate buttons) at the same time, click on “log off” then “OK”. Screen will
automatically log off and then log back on. If that does not work, use the Windows key, right of control key on bottom of
keyboard. Click on “log off”.
7. What are those other gray buttons? The ‘refresh’ button will bring in real-time information,
if you need up-to-the-minute quotes (for example, stock prices, or baseball game scores…). The ‘stop’ button is useful if
your computer is spinning its wheels trying to connect to a web site. If you do not want to wait, click ‘stop’ to free up
the computer for another use.
8. Where can I get e-mail? A few websites still offer free e-mail. www.yahoo.com,
www.lycos.com, www.hotmail.com are some choices. Follow the directions on the web site.
